What is the chargeable weight? How is the price of a parcel calculated?

Chargeable weight (volume weight) refers to the weight of the parcel in relation to the volume. At Pakettikauppa, shipments are always charged according to either absolute weight or volume weight, whichever is higher.

Example 1:

  • 4.00 kg shipment
  • The parcel’s dimensions are 40 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm
  • Invoicing according to 16.00 kg

In this case, the volume of the parcel is 0.064m 3 (0.4m * 0.4m * 0.4m), or 64 liters. The chargeable weight is usually calculated using 250 kg/m3, in which case the chargeable weight of the shipment in the example is 250 kg/m3 * 0.064 m 3 = 16 kg. Thereby, invoicing would be according to 16.00 kg (the shipment’s chargeable weight).

Example 2:

  • 4.00 kg shipment
  • The parcel’s dimensions are 20 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm
  • Invoicing according to 4.00 kg

In this case, the volume of the package is 0.008m 3 (0.2m * 0.2m * 0.2m), or 8 liters. The chargeable weight is usually calculated using 250 kg/m3, in which case the chargeable weight of the shipment in the example is 250 kg/m3 * 0.008 m 3 = 2 kg. Thereby, invoicing would be according to 4.00 kg (the shipment’s absolute weight).
